This week’s Bugle Call salutes an Aggie couple that for many years has provided leading initiatives and opportunities to past, present and future Aggie generations: Johnette and Jon Jarvis.
A trailblazer and leader, Johnette, class of 1970, helped pave the way for future generations of Aggie women to make an impact at Texas A&M. As a member of one of the first groups of women allowed to attend, Johnette quickly proved to her male classmates that women had a place and a purpose on our campus.
Jon, class of 1968, a fourth generation born and bred Aggie and army veteran, took it upon himself to ask Johnette for help in class. After offering her a piece of gum in exchange for tutoring, the rest is history. Jon graduated from Texas A&M with a double major in ag economics and sociology, leading to his now-career of owning and operating Jarvis Farms in the Texas Panhandle.
Johnette and Jon’s passion lies in the Aggie Ring Scholarships program, which began with their own Aggie ring endowment established in 2007. Since then, the Jarvis’ have spearheaded a program that provides financial assistance to students who can’t afford their Aggie rings, with more than 70 students receiving rings through over 53 endowed Aggie Ring Scholarships and a general Aggie Ring scholarship fund.
It was no surprise when Jon and Johnette were voted Parents of the Year in 1999 as they have lovingly supported their children, Shanna Class of 1998, Scott Class of 2000 and his wife Bryn Class of 2004. Season ticket holders for more than 20 years, they taught their children to always cheer for the Ags and for whoever was playing against that school down in Austin.
The Jarvises have exemplified the Aggie core values of excellence, integrity, leadership, loyalty, respect and selfless service, all while spreading the Aggie spirit to anyone and everyone they’ve ever met. The Texas A&M Foundation joins the entire Aggie family in honoring Johnette ’70 and Jon Jarvis ’68…today’s Aggie Bugle Call!
