The love David Gilbert ’07 had for Texas A&M University was solidified the moment he witnessed the electric atmosphere of Kyle Field during an Aggie football game. Following in the footsteps of his older brother, Jon ’04, he knew Texas A&M was where he belonged.
He arrived in Aggieland with an infectious enthusiasm for life and a deep desire to serve. During his brief time at Texas A&M, he immersed himself in campus activities to develop leadership skills and make a difference in his community. His parents remember him as a young man who lived by the motto: “God first, others second, and I’m third.”
In June 2004, an unforeseen tragedy altered the course of David’s life. While driving, his car suffered a tire blowout and flipped multiple times. Miraculously, he walked away unharmed, but a subsequent hospital examination revealed a more daunting challenge: an aggressive form of lymphoma. David underwent immediate treatment and briefly entered remission, but the cancer returned. Through his final months, he was surrounded by his Aggie friends who provided unwavering support, prayers and encouragement. He passed away in June 2005, leaving behind a legacy of service and love that would soon inspire something remarkable.
